Biography
Brooke Maskin, originally from Ridgewood, New Jersey, is a Gettysburg College Class of '20 graduate with a Bachelor of Music Education from the Sunderman Conservatory of Music. She obtained her PreK-12 music teacher certification in the state of Pennsylvania which allows her to teach general, instrumental, and choral music. Brooke also graduated with a Spanish Minor and combined both areas of study in a variety of contexts throughout her undergraduate career. She student taught in a secondary placement at a 9-12 high school band program coupled with a music theory class through remote learning strategies. Earlier in her student teaching experience, Brooke completed her elementary placement at a K-3 school teaching elementary general music.

During her time at Gettysburg College, Brooke's passion for teaching and learning music brought her performance opportunities in many ensembles, including: the Sunderman Conservatory Wind Symphony, the Gettysburg College Symphony Orchestra, the Bullets Marching Band, Gamelan Gita Semara (Balinese Percussion Ensemble), Clarinet Ensemble, and various chamber groups. She served as a section leader in the Wind Symphony and Symphony Orchestra, Drum Major for the Bullets Marching Band, and assistant conductor of the Clarinet Ensemble. Brooke also participated in Audeamus (upper-voice choir), Percussion Ensemble, and the Gettysburg College Jazz Band.
In the Gettysburg College chapter of the Collegiate National Association for Music Education (NAfME), she served as Secretary her sophomore year and Treasurer her junior year. Brooke helped to organize the chapter's annual trip each Spring to the Pennsylvania Music Educator's Association (PMEA) conference as well as networked with the guest speakers and clinicians for these monthly meetings. In addition to these experiences, she participated in many professional development opportunities such as the District VII and PMEA annual conferences.
Through the Music Department at Gettysburg College, Brooke served as a Peer Learning Associate (PLA) for courses including Social Foundations of Music Education, Theory III, and Theory IV. In this role, she attended classes, lead discussions, provided study sessions, and reviewed lesson plans for the students enrolled. Brooke also held a Student Advisory Council Member position at the Sunderman Conservatory of Music during all four years. In this role, she acted as a liaison between students and faculty on a variety of conservatory matters throughout the academic year. Brooke's leadership within the Conservatory was used to help the Office of Admissions as a Student Music Ambassador where she helped with recruitment and retention, advocating for the wide variety of majors and programs offered at Sunderman. She gave tours to prospective and admitted students and also assisted in running the Conservatory's instagram page.
Working with the Education Department alongside the Center for Public Service (CPS) at Gettysburg College, Brooke was a tutor for El Centro. This is an after-school program for elementary age native Spanish speaking students within the Gettysburg and greater Adam's County community. In this role, she helped individual students build their reading, writing, and math skills in Spanish and English. Brooke also combined her Music Education Major and Spanish Minor with a unique teaching opportunity in order to complete a course cluster. Through another after-school English as a Second Language (ESL) program called Casa de la Cultura, she created a semester-long unit plan centered around teaching children’s songs and games of Latin American context. Brooke taught children ages 5-13 in the Children’s Migrant Literacy Program and gained valuable experience connecting with these students.
In addition to interning with collegiate ensembles, she interned with the Gettysburg Children's Choir and Chamber Chorale in the Spring of 2019 under the mentorship of artistic director Dr. Brent C. Talbot. Working with students in grades 3-8, Brooke lead warm-ups, helped to create and organize the program for their 20th Season Celebration concert, and conducted select pieces. She was invited back as an assistant director for the week-long summer camp that same year, where she composed an original work titled, 'The Rain Brings Spring' for students to learn and sing.
Outside of school, Brooke loves to spend time immersed in nature. Whether hiking, bike-riding, or soaking up the sun, she leads an active lifestyle. She also enjoys trying new recipes in the kitchen with her younger sister and spending time with her pets. Music is an integral part of Brooke's life and she aspires to share her passion with others.
